Job Profile

ReedPop is looking for an Editor-in-Chief for the re-launch and continued development of the Metaverse (findthemetaverse.com) website.  This is a major new initiative in an extremely exciting sector, and the candidate selected for this role will have a unique opportunity to shape the editorial voice of a key new brand. They will take the lead on establishing its style and values, drive traffic and audience growth, and establish the site as a global authority in pop culture and at ReedPop events globally.

For 15 years, ReedPop has been innovating in the B2C event space and this launch combines the reputation and built-in audience of our live events with the expertise of our Digital team, who have successfully built gaming websites like Eurogamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Dicebreaker, and more. Our unique strengths in both areas means that Metaverse is a significant opportunity to pursue ambitious ideas with maximum reach, leveraging the extensive access to studios, publishers, developers, creators and on-screen talent that Reedpop enjoys worldwide.

Our ideal candidate brings with them extensive journalism and published writing experience (substantial online component preferred), alongside the drive and ambition to produce content that covers comics, movies, gaming, anime, and everything in between.  A deep understanding of the pop-culture space is essential: you will need to know the main industry trends and the current state of editorial, and have a clear vision for how Metaverse can stand out in the current media landscape. Where you don’t know it yourself, you’ll need to know, and commission, the writers and creators who can deliver the expert insight for which ReedPop’s brands are known. While the launch phase is expected to draw the majority of our content from ReedPop’s own shows, the site will need to grow beyond them and you’ll need to build – or better yet, arrive with – relationships with industry and PR contacts that will deliver access year-round.

As Editor-in-Chief you will create, commission, and edit exciting and entertaining pieces on pop culture, constructed to reach the widest possible audience through SEO, social media, and direct traffic. You will build a fledging editorial team while maintaining relationships with freelancers, video editors, and event teams in the US and UK. You will create and implement new strategies to grow traffic and video views on the site and on YouTube, and conceive and deliver brand representation at events internationally, at both ReedPop events and beyond. You’ll also need to balance audience growth alongside serving our small but growing band of paying Metaverse subscribers.

The successful applicant will be expected to appear on video and podcasts internally and externally, and will have the opportunity to appear on stage at ReedPop events worldwide.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Define and deliver the editorial voice and brand values for Metaverse
  • Shape the site into a significant and trusted voice in the pop culture space
  • Day-to-day management of the website and editorial staff, ensuring that the site delivers timely and popular content that serves our communities
  • Identify new growth opportunities for the site, both editorially and commercially
  • Deliver accurate, clear and concise copy to hourly, daily and weekly deadlines, following well-defined editorial standards
  • Contribute your own written and editorial content to the site, setting a high standard of excellence for your colleagues
  • Seek out and develop a freelance pool of best-in-the-business writers, and conceive, commission and edit writing from those writers within budget
  • Identify the agenda-setting communities that can inform potential stories and content
  • Appear on stage and in video
  • Work closely with PRs and other contacts to go deeper on stories and articles
  • Work in our CMS to make sure stories meet a high standard of presentation
  • Collaborate with the entire editorial and events teams on all aspects of our coverage

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Substantial previous experience editing or leading the direction of an entertainment website or magazine
  • People management experience, inspiring and leading a team to produce their best work
  • An understanding of how the business of pop culture and events operates - which products sell strongly, latest industry trends and the key players in the market
  • A keen sense for the next big thing in pop culture
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive
  • Positive attitude and a team mentality
  • Passion and excitement about pop culture
  • Knowledge of how to construct pages and articles to attract an audience beyond the site, including search and social platforms
  • Understanding of the conversion tactics that will drive readers to become paying subscribers
  • Openness and understanding of advanced analytics (including Google Analytics, Search Console, and Parse.ly)
  • Understanding of how to incorporate commerce (affiliate, merchandise sales) into editorial strategy

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Specific experience in covering live pop culture events
  • Prior experience in public speaking or live hosting
  • A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject
  • Video streaming experience and experience with sites such as Twitch, YouTube, TikTok etc.

The job you are applying for is subject to a COVID-19 vaccination requirement. The successful candidate will be required to submit proof of vaccination showing their last dose of a COVID-19 2-dose vaccine or one dose of a single dose vaccine approved or authorized by the FDA or WHO and maintain up to date vaccination as recommended by the CDC.  If you are unable to be vaccinated due to a medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance you should speak to a recruiter about requesting an exemption/accommodation.
