The role of the Editor is to drive editorial excellence, supporting the commercial performance and development of the Infosecurity Magazine brand in line with department strategy and the business as a whole. Specifically, they are responsible for defining and driving the editorial strategy for the brand and taking ownership for all content published.

The Editor is expected to play a significant outward facing role in industry. They should also show strong entrepreneurial flair, which translates into commercial advantage for our brands across all channels, to control costs, drive growth & profitability.

Scope:

Infosecurity magazine, part of the Infosecurity Group at Reed Exhibitions - which includes the no.1 event in Europe - is the leading magazine and website in the information security sector, offering unrivalled content for the end user community and a diverse range of branding and lead generating commercial opportunities for industry vendors. Our magazine and website is constantly growing, and we are expanding our impressive footprint, forging ahead with new and exciting ways to engage and grow our audience, develop innovative products & means of delivery to cater for the increasing educational needs of our end user community. We are also developing new opportunities for the vendor community to increase the financial performance of the product.

Key responsibilities

Strategy & Portfolio Development

  • To carry forward existing strategy and deliver on agreed plans.
  • To work with the publishing director to further develop and execute an effective publishing/brand development strategy and play a key and active role in the wider development of the group.

Sales input

  • To explore new and existing ways of generating higher revenues in order that we exceed the targets set in the budget, on and off-line.
  • Support the sales team in developing strong market share
  • Lead the development of exceptional industry relationships through regular client visits, trade event attendance and close liaison with industry associations

Marketing input

  • Work with the marketing team in consolidating our position and optimising ways of increasing readership, market reach and industry profile in print and online.
  • Monitoring, understanding and reacting to market trends and other data available such as competitive data.
  • Work with the marketing team to develop and execute effective growth strategies.

Editorial

  • Remain responsible for the quality of all print and online content, driving editorial strategy.
  • Directly manage the Deputy Editor and Reporter
  • Manage all freelance staff (and associated costs) for print contributions and online educational support and client liaison and contractors.
  • Management of the contract publisher with respect to the production schedule, design, distribution / circulation and sales.
  • Signing off every print magazine, including the magazine cover
  • Manage and commission the editorial output of all lead generation activities

Financial performance:

  • Looking closely at all the criteria that can and will affect the financial performance of a brand, at the same time putting in place strategies that will ensure we are generating a high level of profit against maximum revenues.
  • Producing the annual editorial budget based on the magazine’s strategy, in conjunction with the Publishing Director

Ideal candidate profile:

A highly driven and enthusiastic professional who can demonstrate:

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Passion for the cybersecurity industry
  • Fantastic people skills – confident networker, moderator and spokesperson
  • Strategic thinking – keeping up with digital innovation, publishing evolution and industry trends 
  • Willingness and desire to be ‘the face of’ the Infosecurity brand
  • Client management skills – ability to manage client relationships, build a good rapport with customers yet know when to draw a line to protect editorial integrity
  • Ability to interview senior industry professionals
  • Fierce protection of editorial integrity
  • Ability to meet editorial deadlines without exception
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workloads.
  • A high level of computer literacy, including Excel, Adobe, Photoshop, Word and preferably PowerPoint, although not essential.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving team environment across a range of projects.
  • Good people management skills

  • Ability to manage a budget
