ReedPop's leading PC games website, Rock Paper Shotgun, is looking for a Section Editor to join its team of writers and video makers to expand the quality, quantity and reach of its editorial output.
As Section Editor, you will work closely with our editorial team across every part of the site, taking the lead on heading up our reviews section, but also writing and editing news posts, previews and features as required.
Your main responsibility will be to manage our reviews scheduling and output, making sure reviews are in tune with the editorial voice of RPS, and ensuring they meet the highest standards of being informative, engaging and entertaining. You’ll also set our reviews content strategy for the section, selecting the games that will resonate most with our audience, and working together with our extensive freelance pool to create the best original PC game reviews on the internet.
The successful applicant will have both journalism and editing experience, and a deep love of everything PC gaming has to offer. You will be full of ambition and drive to discover the next big hits we’ll be writing about for years to come - from tiny solo developer projects to AAA blockbusters and complex 4X strategy games - and be raring to make your mark on one of the most respected editorial teams in the business.
Work with the Editor-in-Chief to select the right games and content priorities for our reviews.
Manage the production and publishing schedule to make sure the team’s time is well spent and our reviews are as complete as possible, as early as possible.
Play major video game releases across lots of popular genres and deliver comprehensive, accurate, clear and concisely written reviews.
Edit reviews and news posts written by the team and our external freelance network for accuracy, clarity and structure, ensuring they meet our editorial standards.
Manage our freelance budget and work with external writers when necessary.
Work in our CMS to make sure copy meet a high standard of presentation.
Collaborate with the entire editorial team on all aspects of our coverage.
Contribute to wider editorial output as required, such as previews, features and developer interviews.
Required Skills and Experience:
Superb writing style, with an emphasis on clarity and economy, but also an entertaining and appealing tone.
Great attention to detail and the ability to edit other writers’ copy to the highest standards of accuracy while under time pressure.
Extensive knowledge of PC games across a wide range of genres.
Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive, strong organisational skills and a methodical mindset.
Desired Skills and Experience:
An understanding of search engine optimisation (SEO).
Experience of managing other staff.
A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject.
Knowledge of the games industry itself, with a clear interest in the sector.
An interest in the technology, entertainment and lifestyle sectors in general.
