ReedPop is looking for a Staff Writer for VG247. This is primarily a role requiring you to write guides, news, and features, as well as constructing pages to best SEO guidelines.
VG247 has built a reputation for delivering the best fast-paced consumer news in the games industry, across interviews, features and analysis.
The successful applicant will have some journalism or published writing experience, but will be full of talent, ambition and drive to produce and report specifically on games as service titles such as Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Warzone, Minecraft and the like. These are some of the biggest games around and are constantly being tweaked and expanded.
As a Staff Writer, you will work within our highly experienced editorial team, with day-to-day support from our editors. You’ll be primarily working on game guides, but also on news,interviews, and features centred on service titles. You will have opportunities to travel the world to report on industry leading events (once safe to do so), and appear in the site's video and podcast content.
Work with the Editor-in-Chief and Guides Editor to select the right target games, and the best approaches, structure, and content priorities for our guides.
Maintain expert knowledge of the live game space, including carefully monitoring popularity of new and existing games on Steam, consoles, and other distribution platforms.
Ensure our guides are structured according to best practice for search engine optimisation (SEO) as well as clarity and usability for readers.
Monitor guide performance and adjust content where necessary to ensure they reach the broadest audience possible.
Work with our teams to develop and adhere to best practice content creation and SEO.
Play major games as service titles across many popular genres and deliver comprehensive, accurate, clear and concisely written guides under time pressure, ensuring they meet our editorial standards.
To produce news content on VG247 which will include sourcing information from other websites, reporting on data, and writing up press releases.
To source your own stories and conduct interviews with developers, publishers, retailers and other leading games industry sectors, where applicable.
To support the VG247 wider editorial teams during busy periods, such as with transcribing interviews or updating features.
Embed within game communities to spot potential breaking news and the most interesting stories.
Be a part of VG247's video and podcast output.
Work closely with PRs and other contacts to go deeper on stories and articles.
Required Skills and Experience:
Ability to unearth and tell interesting stories about video games.
Willingness to secure interviews and ask tough questions.
An understanding of how the business of video games operates - which products sell strongly, latest industry trends and the key players in the market.
Ability to identify the next big game or developer.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Extensive knowledge of GaaS video games across a wide range of genres, with a particular focus on the highest-profile new releases and most played games.
Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive.
Positive attitude and a team mentality.
Passion and excitement about video games and the industry.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject.
Video and podcasting experience
Experience with sites such as Twitch, YouTube etc.
